Obverse description A freed enslaved man stands in full relief at centre, arms raised and outstretched in a gesture of liberation, broken chains at his feet. Tropical vegetation including sugar cane and palm trees flank him to the left, with further plants to the right and a windmill visible in the middle distance. The Roman numeral date MDCCCXXXIV appears in the lower exergue, with the engraver's signature CARTER F. beneath, and the circular legend arranged around the upper field.
