Obverse description Central field features the coat of arms of the Cape of Good Hope, depicting a shield with a chevron and floral ornaments, surmounted by an elephant, with a full-rigged sailing ship above as a crest, flanked by scrolled supporters. The circular legend reads SOUTH AFRICAN EXHIBITION OF 1885 around the upper periphery, with the motto IN MELIORA SPERA along the lower portion of the shield. Three small decorative devices appear at the base of the field.

Reverse description The reverse consists entirely of concentric bands of raised lettering with no pictorial device. The outermost ring carries the place names CONCORDIA NAMAQUALAND and CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, while inner rings bear the Afrikaans inscription ARBEID VERSTAND VERZEKEREN VOORSPOED, and the central field reads VREDE EN EENZAAMHEID.
