| Obverse description | Central field features the coat of arms of the Cape of Good Hope, depicting a shield with a chevron and floral ornaments, surmounted by an elephant, with a full-rigged sailing ship above as a crest, flanked by scrolled supporters. The circular legend reads SOUTH AFRICAN EXHIBITION OF 1885 around the upper periphery, with the motto IN MELIORA SPERA along the lower portion of the shield. Three small decorative devices appear at the base of the field. |
