Reverse description A large wreath composed of fern fronds on the left and oak leaves on the right, tied at the base with a ribbon bow, enclosing an oval sunken field bearing the legend ARTIBUS DIGNIS HONOR INSIGNIS arranged in two curved lines with five five-pointed stars. The date MDCCCLXXXVIII appears in the exergue below the wreath. The central oval field is left plain for engraving of the recipient's name.
