Obverse description An African couple seated beneath a tall palm tree, the woman on the left cradling an infant and the man on the right holding a book, symbolising liberty and education. Fruit and foliage are depicted in the lower field, with the engraver's name DAVIS BIRM. inscribed along the base. The date MDCCCXXXVIII appears in the exergue, and the circular legend arcs around the upper field.
