Obverse description A draped classical female figure stands in the centre, extending her right hand to unlock the gates of the Crystal Palace and holding a caduceus in her left hand, symbolising Industry and Science respectively. A lamb stands to her lower left, and a Corinthian helmet rests at her lower right, with exotic foliage and the iron-and-glass interior of the building visible in the background. The engraver's signature PINCHES appears in the lower exergue.

Reverse description A detailed low-relief panoramic view of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham occupies the centre of the field, with flags flying from its transepts and wings. The legend CRYSTAL PALACE arcs along the upper border, and OPENED MDCCCLIV curves along the lower border. The maker's inscriptions PINCHES and LONDON appear flanking the base of the building.
