Obverse description Facing bust of John Philip Sousa in military uniform with ornate epaulettes, beard and pince-nez spectacles, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. The legend JOHN PHILIP SOUSA arcs along the upper rim, with birth and death dates 1854 and 1932 flanking the portrait at left and right respectively, and the legend COMPOSER • BANDMASTER along the lower rim; the engraver's initials B.M.Sc. appear at lower right of the bust.
