Obverse description The obverse depicts a high-relief representation of the Mariner IX spacecraft in the central field, with extended solar panels rendered in detail, shown in orbit above a stylized globe of Mars at lower left. An elliptical orbital path surrounds the composition, and the legend MARINER 1971 IX arcs along the upper border, with FIRST MARS ORBITER inscribed in the field to the right of the spacecraft and ORBITAL EXPLORATION along the lower border.
