Sudbury's "Big Nickel" — the giant replica of a 1951 Canadian five-cent piece — wasn't erected until 1964, and the souvenir medal industry moved quickly to capitalize on the landmark's fresh notoriety. This copper piece is a product of that immediate commercial wave, issued the following year when the site was still a genuine novelty rather than an established tourist fixture.
The deliberate irony of calling it the "Big Penny" rather than referencing the nickel is worth noting — whether by error or design, it's never been definitively resolved.
