Obverse description An allegorical female figure representing Australia stands facing right, draped, raising a laurel wreath in her right hand while resting her left hand on a shield bearing the coat of arms of New South Wales. Attributes of the arts, industry, and commerce are arranged at her feet on either side, including a violin, square, hammer, anvil, anchor, books, amphora, ship's wheel, and painting palette. Five stylised waves appear below, with a brick wall behind the figure and the elevation of the Garden Palace by James Barnet rendered in the background. The peripheral legend and motto run around the raised rim.
