Obverse description Detailed relief depiction of the three-masted steam-sailing vessel Vega navigating icy Arctic waters, with a rocky coastline and icebergs visible in the background. A curved legend at the top of the field records the completion of the Northeast Passage during the reign of King Oscar II, with a further inscription in the lower exergue naming A.E. Nordenskjöld, the ship Vega, its commander L. Palander, and the dates 1878–1879.
