Obverse description Full-length figure of the Statue of Liberty in high relief at center, torch raised aloft with radiating beams of light, holding a tablet inscribed JULY IV MDCCLXXVI. The New York City skyline is depicted in the background on both sides, flanked by stars. The dates 1865 and 1965 appear in the lower field on either side of the statue. A circular legend surrounds the design.

Reverse description A crowded scene of immigrants on the deck of a ship occupies the lower portion of the field, gesturing toward the Statue of Liberty visible in the background at right. An inset shield-shaped portrait medallion of Auguste Bartholdi appears in the upper left, labeled below his bust. Ship rigging and masts rise in the background. An inscription at right reads IMMIGRANTS' WELCOME / STATUE OF LIBERTY 1886. A circular legend surrounds the entire composition.
