Obverse description The obverse features a relief figure of a coal miner in working attire, wielding a pick, superimposed over a raised outline map of West Virginia with a star marking Charleston, the state capital. The legend 'WEST VIRGINIA' arcs prominently across the upper field, with 'THE MOUNTAIN STATE' along the lower rim and the engraver's initials 'DC' visible in the lower field.

The whole is flanked by laurel branches, with the Franklin Mint mark 'FM' at the lower center.
