Obverse description The obverse features a detailed relief of a thoroughbred horse standing in profile to the left, superimposed over an outline map of the state of Kentucky with a star and the legend FRANKFORT marking the state capital. The legend KENTUCKY arcs along the upper field, with THE BLUEGRASS STATE inscribed along the lower border, all within a beaded rim.

Reverse description The reverse displays an open laurel wreath flanking the central field, which bears the bold legend KENTUCKY above the inscription ATTAINED STATEHOOD / JUNE 1, 1792. At the base, a scroll cartouche bears the legend 15TH STATE. At the top of the field, a circular medallion depicts the Kentucky state flower, the goldenrod, surrounded by stars and the legend KENTUCKY GOLDENROD. A beaded rim frames the entire design.
