At the top, a circular medallion depicts the state flower, the Mountain Laurel, surrounded by stars and the inscriptions CONNECTICUT and MOUNTAIN LAUREL. Below the central legend, the inscription ATTAINED STATEHOOD / JANUARY 9, 1788 appears, with a ribbon cartouche at the bottom bearing 5TH STATE and the Franklin Mint mintmark.
