Obverse description The obverse features a relief map of the state of Connecticut in the central field, with the capital city Hartford marked by a star and inscribed legend. Overlapping the lower portion of the map is a detailed depiction of a full-rigged sailing ship at sea. The legend CONNECTICUT arcs along the upper periphery and THE CONSTITUTION STATE along the lower, all within a beaded border.

Reverse description The reverse displays a circular medallion at the top bearing a relief depiction of the Mountain Laurel, Connecticut's state flower, surrounded by stars and the legend CONNECTICUT MOUNTAIN LAUREL. The central field bears the large inscription CONNECTICUT, below which the text ATTAINED STATEHOOD JANUARY 9, 1788 appears in smaller relief lettering. A laurel wreath frames the central field on both sides, and a ribbon scroll at the base reads 5TH STATE, with the Franklin Mint mintmark below, all within a beaded border.
