Reverse description A laurel wreath frames the central field, its stems tied at the base by a scroll cartouche bearing the legend 31ST STATE. At the upper center, a circular medallion depicts the California Golden Poppy, the state flower, surrounded by stars and the inscriptions CALIFORNIA and GOLDEN POPPY. In the central field, the legend CALIFORNIA appears in large raised letters above the inscription ATTAINED STATEHOOD SEPTEMBER 9, 1850. The Franklin Mint mintmark appears at the bottom of the field within the wreath, and the piece is bordered by a beaded rim.
