Obverse description High-relief bust of Sir Anthony Musgrave facing right, bearded and wearing a jacket with lapels, occupying the majority of the field. The sculptor's signature 'A. TOFT' appears incuse on the truncation. The legend 'SIR ANTHONY MUSGRAVE G.C.M.G.' curves along the upper periphery, with 'FOUNDER 1879' inscribed along the lower periphery. The medal features a reeded border.

Reverse description The reverse features a large decorative wreath composed of mixed botanical elements including laurel, coffee berries, palm fronds, and tropical flora in high relief, enclosing the central field. Within the wreath, the legend 'INSTITUTE OF JAMAICA' appears in the upper portion, separated by a small ornamental device from 'LITERATURE / SCIENCE / ART' below. The lower field is left plain for engraving of recipient details. A reeded border frames the design.
