Obverse description The obverse features two superimposed overlapping oval medallions in high relief against a plain field, bordered by a beaded rim. The left medallion depicts a full-length figure of the Virgin Mary standing on a serpent, with rays emanating from her outstretched hands and a halo above her head, surrounded by the Miraculous Medal prayer legend and the date 1830. The right medallion shows the Marian monogram (AM surmounted by a cross) encircled by twelve stars, with two hearts below — one plain and one pierced by a sword — all enclosed within an oval border, with the mint mark P-B in the lower right field.
