Reverse description
The Coat of Arms of the Republic of Mordovia is depicted. The central element is the coat of arms of the city of Saransk (founded in 1641 as a fortification, now the capital of the Republic), which depicts a fox (a symbol of the hunting industry characteristic of the region in the past) and three arrows—a reference to the hunting traditions of the population. Surrounding the coat of arms is the Nasharnaya Grivna (a national women`s ornament). It features seven ornaments—elements of Mordvin embroidery—symbolizing the seven cities of the republic: Saransk, Ardatov, Insar, Kovylkino, Krasnoslobodsk, Ruzayevka, and Temnikov. The outer frame of the coat of arms—golden ears of wheat entwined with a ribbon in the colors of the flag of Mordovia (madder, white, and dark blue)—symbolizes the fertility, agriculture, and wealth of the land of Mordovia. The eight-pointed star (solar symbol) at the top of the composition is a traditional symbol often used in Mordvin arts and crafts, representing light, life, and protection. The mint mark is in the lower right corner. An inscription is along the edge of the medal.
