Obverse description Detailed relief scene depicting the raising of the British flag at Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788, with figures in period military dress gathered around a flagpole, ships at anchor in the harbour and a crowd on the hillside in the background. The legend RAISING THE FLAG arcs along the upper rim, the dates 1788-1988 appear in the lower field, and the engraver's signature McCASKER is inscribed in the exergue.
