Reverse description A detailed relief depiction of the three-masted ship Belgica sailing to the left amid icy waters occupies the central field. The legend around the upper rim commemorates the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897–1899, with the word HIVERNAGE (wintering) inscribed in the field. The name of the commander, Ad. de Gerlache, appears in a recessed cartouche at the base, above the title COMMANDANT. The engraver's signature F. WISSAERT is visible in the lower right field.
