| Obverse description | A seated allegorical female figure in classical robes is depicted in high relief, leaning forward and holding a scroll or document in her left hand while resting her right hand thoughtfully near her face. To her right stands a terrestrial globe atop a pedestal with stacked books, and to her lower left are artistic implements including a palette and brushes. A winged bird in flight appears at the base of the composition. The encircling legend reads OTTAWA COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE, and a rectangular cartouche at the bottom contains the motto ALERE FLAMMAM. A small winged maker's mark appears at the very base below the cartouche. |
