| Obverse description | The obverse features a relief map of the southern portion of the South Island of New Zealand, with the surrounding seas indicated by horizontal wave lines. At the centre of the map, the Otago provincial coat of arms is depicted in a quartered shield bearing a pickaxe, a flaming torch, the letter R with a cross, the head of a sheep, a sword, and a sheaf, with the word OTAGO across the centre.
