| Reverse description | The reverse is dominated by a central oval cartouche with a beaded border, enclosing a four-line inscription recording the attendance of the Empress of the French at the inauguration ceremony. Surrounding the cartouche, an arched legend in the upper field records that Ismail Premier inaugurated the canal on 17 November 1869 and protected its execution. A further inscription running around the lower and side borders notes the concession granted on 30 November 1855 by Mohammed Said Pacha, Viceroy of Egypt, to Ferdinand de Lesseps. Small floral ornaments punctuate the border at the cardinal points. |
