Obverse description
A stylized map of Africa highlights its southern tip, where the legend “Cabo da Boa Esperança” (Cape of Good Hope) is inscribed, next to the depiction of a 15th-century Portuguese carrack under sail. A curved arrow reinforces the idea of the route traced around the cape. To the right, a bust of Bartolomeu Dias is shown, identified by the legend “Bartolomeu Dias – 1487”, celebrating the epic voyage of the Portuguese navigator who first managed to round the cape. At the top are the emblems of the Clube Militar Naval (CMN – Naval Military Club), the Clube do Sargento da Armada (CSA – Navy Sergeants’ Club) and the Clube de Praças da Armada (CPA – Navy Ratings’ Club).

Reverse description
An allegorical composition with strong symbolic meaning: Adamastor, the mythological figure created by Luís de Camões in Os Lusíadas, appears as a human face with a severe expression, fused with the raging sea waves. He stretches out a powerful arm over the raised inscription “1987”, resting upon the cliffs that evoke the Cape of Good Hope. At the bottom, a modern Portuguese Navy frigate sails forward, in clear parallel with the boldness of the past: the message is that, just like Bartolomeu Dias in 1487, the Navy still remains fearless in the face of the “Adamastors” of its own time. On the left, four Portuguese shields are aligned vertically, while in a semicircle below is the inscription “DIA DA MARINHA” (Navy Day). At the upper right appears the date “8 DE JULHO” (8th of July), the day of celebration.
