Obverse description Right-facing laureate bust of Napoleon III in high relief, with characteristic imperial goatee and pointed moustache. The engraver's signature BARRE appears on the truncation. The legend arcs along the left and right rims.

Reverse description An allegorical crowned female figure personifying the Navy, seated facing left on a draped surface, extends her right arm to shelter four young naked children with a veil. Her left hand rests on an upright naval anchor beside a rectangular tablet inscribed with the date 15 NOV 1862. The legend arcs along the upper rim, and a three-line dedicatory inscription appears in the lower exergue.
