Obverse description Reproduction of the design of the first coinage struck in the New World, the 'Carlos and Juana' issue, depicted in low relief with pillars of Hercules and waves in the field. Inset at right is an actual circulating 1 peso coin dated 1980, bearing the bust of revolutionary leader José María Morelos, set into the medal's surface. The surrounding legend references the Spanish monarchs Emperor Charles V and Queen Juana.
