Obverse description Reproduction of the medieval city seal of Kiel in high relief, depicting a large cog (medieval sailing vessel) with furled sails, a cross at the masthead, and a helmsman figure standing in the vessel. Decorative rope or foliage motifs appear beneath the hull. The circular legend runs along the beaded border in Gothic (Lombardic) capitals, separated by ornamental stops, with two small six-pointed stars flanking the ship in the field.
