Obverse description A gilt relief depiction of the Auberge de Castille in Valletta dominates the central field, flanked to the left by a silver-finished figure of a Knights Hospitaller in full armour bearing a shield emblazoned with the Maltese Cross. The legend appears in the lower exergue on a dark band in two lines.

Reverse description A large gilt eight-pointed Maltese Cross in high relief occupies the central field within a raised circular border. The legend MALTA is arranged around the cross with one letter per quadrant. The polished silver outer border is decorated with a ring of twelve small Maltese crosses evenly spaced around the circumference.
