Obverse description Three-quarter facing bust of Juan Luis Vives (Ludovicus Vives Valentinus), depicted in Renaissance attire with a fur-trimmed robe and flat cap, his right hand raised in a speaking gesture and his left hand holding a book against his body. The circular legend along the upper rim reads LUDOVICUS VIVES VALENTINUS with the dates 1492 and 1540 flanking the lower field.
