Reverse description A caravan of Conestoga wagons drawn by oxen moves across the field, set against a raised relief map of the Louisiana Territory. The date APRIL 30 1803 appears in the lower field. The circular legend around the rim reads WESTWARD THE COURSE OF EMPIRE MAKES ITS WAY, the lower portion appearing in mirror relief.
