Obverse description The obverse displays the enamelled coat of arms of Kaluga in relief at centre: a green shield bearing an Imperial crown above a silver wavy band (representing the Oka River), surmounted by a full Imperial crown in gold. Flanking the shield are two gilt oak branches tied at the base with a blue enamel ribbon bow. A suspension loop is affixed at the top of the crown.

Reverse description The reverse bears an outer arched legend running along the top and sides of the rectangular field, with a central cartouche containing a multi-line commemorative inscription in relief Cyrillic. The dates 1862 and 1912 appear at the lower corners, separated by the date '3/VII' on a decorative scroll. An Imperial crown with suspension loop is affixed at the top.
