Obverse description Left-facing bust of Pope John XXIII in high relief, wearing the camauro and ornate papal vestments with embroidered decoration. The circular legend runs along the upper rim, with the regnal year inscription in the lower field; the engraver's name GIAMPAOLI appears just below the bust truncation.

Reverse description A standing draped female figure personifying the Church occupies the center of the field, holding an open book inscribed EVAN GELI VM in her right arm and raising a flame in her left hand. To her left, a family group comprising a mother with children is depicted before a house; to her right, two male workers with a hammer and anvil are shown against an industrial backdrop with a smokestack. The date 15-V-1961 appears in the lower exergue.
