Obverse description The obverse depicts a bearded male figure, representing the historian Josephus, shown in three-quarter view holding a scroll in his left hand while raising his right hand to his chin in a contemplative gesture. In the lower right of the field, an inset circular vignette in lower relief portrays a scene of Roman soldiers carrying the Ark of the Covenant and a menorah, referencing the sack of Jerusalem. The engraver's initials appear at the right of the inset vignette.
