Obverse description A ho-oo (phoenix) displayed in high relief at centre, its spread wings and elaborate tail feathers rising upward, perched above a plain Greek cross in the lower field. Flanking the cross are two sprays of chrysanthemum blossoms, with olive or laurel branches extending to either side. The design is contained within a beaded inner border.
