Reverse description A detailed frontal elevation of the Smithsonian Institution Building (the Castle) in high relief occupies the central field. The motto 'FOR THE INCREASE AND DIFFUSION OF KNOWLEDGE AMONG MEN' arcs along the upper rim, while 'SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION' arcs along the lower rim. A four-line inscription in the exergue reads 'PRESENTED AT / THE BICENTENNIAL OF / JAMES SMITHSON / 1765-1965'.
