Reverse description An allegorical scene in high relief depicting Neptune standing on his sea chariot drawn by two rearing sea-horses, holding a trident, passing through the newly opened canal flanked by lock gates in the background. To the left reclines a river god, and to the right a seated female figure personifying the city of Amsterdam welcomes him with an outstretched arm. The upper legend arcs around the rim, with a three-line inscription and the date MDCCCXXIV in the exergue, followed by the engraver's signature I.P.SCHOUBERG F.
