Obverse description A quadrilobe composition divides the field into four scenes depicting the history of the Birmingham Mint: a worker hand-stamping coins (upper left), a coining press of 1862 (lower left), a striking press (lower right), and an elevation of the Mint building of 1862 (lower centre). At the centre of the cross is the Birmingham Mint mintmark 'H' within a circular device, flanked by the dates 1850 and 1989. Scrolled ribbon legends radiate between the quadrants, and the outer border is decorated with a row of circular bosses.
