Obverse description Left-facing bust of George Washington in high relief occupies the left portion of the field, with a smaller effigy of Washington as a youth positioned to the lower right, flanked by cherry branches in relief. A depiction of a felled tree stump appears in the upper right field, alluding to the cherry tree legend, with the quoted legend "I CANNOT TELL A LIE" inscribed nearby. The legend GEORGE WASHINGTON arcs along the right rim, and the dates 1789-1797 appear in the lower exergue.
