Reverse description The bow of a steamship ploughing through heavy seas occupies the centre of the field, with a sailing vessel visible in the right background. A sinking enemy submarine is depicted in the right foreground between the waves and the sailing ship. The designer's initials 'H.S.' appear at lower right above the exergue, which contains a three-line inscription giving the purpose and dates of the award, separated from the main field by a horizontal line.
