Obverse description Large right-facing bust of Mahatma Gandhi in high relief, wearing round spectacles and a shawl, occupying most of the field. The legend MAHATMA to the upper left and GANDHIJI to the upper right curves around the portrait, with the dates 1869 · 1948 inscribed in the lower exergue. The engraver's signature HUGUENIN appears in small lettering at the lower right of the bust.

Reverse description The Lion Capital of Ashoka, the national emblem of India, depicted in high relief at the centre, showing three lions atop an abacus with the Dharma Chakra wheel.
