Obverse description The silver centre field depicts, in the upper portion, a relief view of St. Peter's Basilica and Square, with an aerial view of the colonnaded piazza below. In the middle, two circular coin effigies are shown side by side: the left bearing the Sacrifice of Abraham scene with the denomination 50, the right bearing the standing effigy of Pope John Paul II with the legend JOAHNES PAULUS II P.M. The gold-plated outer ring bears the legend VATICANO at top, the date split as 20 and 02 on either side, a ring of stars along the lower border, and small ancient coin motifs on the sides.

Reverse description The silver centre field depicts a relief map of Europe showing national borders, with a vertical line and a ring of twelve stars on the right side referencing the European Union flag motif. The gold-plated outer ring bears the bilingual legend EUROPA at left and EUROPE at right, a circle of stars around the border, and the fineness mark Ag 999999 in the lower field.
