| Obverse description | An eagle with wings spread flies to the right across a rough sea, with the island of Elba and a distant coastline visible below. To the left stands the Temple of Janus with its doors thrown open, surmounted by a double-headed bust, and fallen books or tablets scattered at its base. The engraver's initials BR. appear just above the exergue, which bears the date XXVI. FEBRUARY MDCCCXV. and the inscription MUDIE DIREX., with TEMPLVM JANI inscribed on the temple entablature. |
