Obverse description A standing allegorical figure of Liberty dominates the field, holding a torch aloft in her right hand and a sheaf of wheat in her left, with a bald eagle perched on an antique printing press to her left and the original San Diego Union newspaper building in relief to her right. Mountains rise in the background. A ribbon banner in the lower field bears the dates 1776-1976. The circumferential legend arcs around the upper portion of the medal.
