| Obverse description | The field is divided into three panels by laurel branches: at upper center, a three-masted sailing ship on coastal waters with an anchor; at lower left, a colonial church with steeple; and at lower right, a Georgian-style doorway. At the junction of the panels, a large strawberry device bears a ribbon scroll inscribed with the dates 1623-1973, and the designer's initials D.S. appear in the lower center field. The legend PORTSMOUTH curves along the upper rim and NEW HAMPSHIRE along the lower rim. |
