Obverse description Right-facing bust of Emperor Charles V in high relief, wearing an imperial crown, armour, and the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The central effigy is encircled by a broad border containing fourteen crowned coats of arms representing the territories of his empire, arranged clockwise around the field.

Reverse description A nimbate Imperial double-headed eagle displayed in high relief at centre, bearing on its breast the quartered Austrian-Burgundian coat of arms, with the date 1521 flanking the eagle's necks and the mint initial N at the base. The surrounding border contains thirteen crowned heraldic shields representing the various kingdoms and territories of the Habsburg domains.
