Obverse description A standing armoured knight in full relief occupies the centre of the design, holding aloft a sword in his right hand and resting his left on a shield bearing the Cross of St. George; he stands upon a globe surmounted by a royal crown, set against a large cross with radiating sun rays extending to the medal's edge. Flanking the central figure are the heraldic emblems of the British Armed Forces: the Naval badge to the left and the Army badge to the right, with the Royal Air Force eagle badge below. Designer's signature H. OAKES-JONES and maker's name PHILLIPS ALDERSHOT appear in the lower field.
