Obverse description
Five soldiers wearing berets, standing to the front but looking left. The soldier in the middle holds binoculars, the leftmost soldier holds a rifle. They stand on a platform surrounded by a laurel wreath. The two legends follow the border, separated with stars. The mintmark for the Bayerisches Münzkontor is below the middle of the laurel wreath.

The gold background at the top is designed to mimic clouds. Horizontal bar below the U-Boat with wavy horizontal pattern and colourised flags of the United States of America, the United Kingdom and Canada (the old version with a red background and Union Jack, replaced in 1965 with the Tricolour and Maple Leaf).
