Obverse description Three vessels in high relief set upon stylised waves, depicting the evolution of Hamburg's maritime history: a Viking longship to the left, a tall-masted medieval sailing vessel in the centre, and the bow of a modern ocean liner dominating the right foreground. The dates 1189 and 1989 appear in the lower exergue, and the legend arcs along the upper border.
