Obverse description An allegorical river god figure representing the Rhine reclines beside a palm tree, holding a cornucopia, with the unfinished Cologne Cathedral rendered in detail in the background to the right. The date 1. JULI 1838 appears in the lower field. The surrounding legend dedicates the medal to General von Borstell from the city of Cologne.

Reverse description A winged allegorical figure of Victory advances from the left to place a laurel wreath upon the head of a standing general in uniform, who rests one hand on a sword; war trophies including a drum, helmet, and standard lie at their feet. A plinth inscribed DENNEWITZ occupies the lower left field, with the engravers' signatures G. LOOS D. L. HELD FEC. in the exergue. The years 1813, 1814, and 1815 with stars appear in the surrounding border legend.
